About this event

The UHN Office of Research Trainees invites UHN students and postdoctoral researchers to an in-person Peer-to-Peer workshop on Flow Cytometry lead by UHN scientific associate Dr. Helena Boutzen.

Flow cytometry is a powerful technique that allows high throughput acquisition of data, while looking at multiple parameters at the same time. However, strict controls need to be applied to ensure accuracy of the results.

This workshop will provide an introduction to flow cytometry, while will guide attendees through the basics behind flow cytometry and data acquisition. Attendees will also have the opportunity to practice performing the flow cytometry analysis of a drug treatment study using a demo dataset, and see how R can be utilized to accelerate data analysis and generation of IC50 and drug response curves.

This session is free but is restricted to UHN trainees and staff due to limited seating. This workshop will involve hands on learning and all attendees are encouraged to bring their personal computers. All event registrants are asked to read the ORT's Code of Conduct. Speaker Bio:

Dr. Helena Boutzen is a Scientific Associate in Dr. John Dick's laboratory at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. She trained as a pharmacist and completed her residency in Toulouse hospital, France, while doing her PhD in Dr JE Sarry and Pr C Récher’s laboratory. She then joined John Dick’s laboratory as a post-doctoral researcher, and further transitioning to a scientific associate position. For over a decade, she has been studying deregulation of stem cells heavily relying on flow cytometry. One of her key achievements has been the development of stem cell tools used internationally by academic laboratory and licensed with pharmaceutical companies.
